Engage your parliamentarian

August 27, 2014

Parliamentarians have a vital role to play in advancing the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons. ICAN’s Global Parliamentary Appeal aims to build global support for a treaty banning nuclear weapons. It will be presented at intergovernmental meetings aimed at promoting nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

“We, the undersigned parliamentarians, conscious of our duty to protect and promote the safety and well-being of the people we represent, express our deep concern at the continuing threat posed by many thousands of nuclear weapons across the globe. Any use of these ultimate weapons of mass destruction – whether by accident, miscalculation or design – would have catastrophic consequences for humanity and the planet as a whole.

The only way to guarantee that they will never be used again is to outlaw and eliminate them without further delay. We call upon all national governments to negotiate a treaty banning nuclear weapons and leading to their complete eradication. A global ban on nuclear weapons is a humanitarian imperative of the highest order. It is necessary, feasible and increasingly urgent”.

Dear [Name],

Nuclear weapons are the only weapons of mass destruction not yet prohibited by an international convention, even though they have the greatest destructive capacity of all weapons.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is asking parliamentarians around the world to join us in calling upon all national governments to negotiate a treaty banning nuclear weapons.

A global ban on nuclear weapons is a humanitarian imperative of the highest order. It is necessary, feasible and increasingly urgent. I am writing to ask you to sign this parliamentary appeal.Kind regards,
